Baring My Soul
Published in Paperback by Backyard Enterprises (19 March, 2002)
Author: Stacey James McAdoo
Average review score:

Really Enjoyed It!
I really enjoyed the book. When I need a reality check or some uplifting, I pick up the book and re-read specific chapters. The book "Baring My Soul" is very inspirational. It made me laugh, cry and go hmmmmmmm! I am waiting on "Baring My Soul II" because I feel that there was so much yet to be told and now I would like to know about how Stacey & her family have dealt with the loss of her brother.

Loved The Title!
Stacey is such an inspiration to young Black women...and an encouragement to me. She is about to blow up ... move over Mayo Angelou - there is a new poet on the scene and her name is Stacey McAdoo!

One of my favorite chapters was the mental illness, this was very heart touching and on the real. I felt that she really bared her soul and enlightened the Black community that no it's not limited to the white community...it's right in our family and all of us need to be aware of this illness and take a stand. And stop acting like it doesn't exist because it's real...Stacey is a very talented writer and this book had me in tears.

A "Non-Mincing Of The Truth"
If the book "Baring My Soul" by Stacey James McAdoo was to be made into a television series, it would define the true meaning of "reality" television and open the door for more of the kind to follow! Stacey tears down walls and barriers to let nothing but the truth - plain and simple - come barreling through. I could definitely appreciate the raw and intense honesty delivered by Stacey when sharing of her brother's bout with manic depression and the effects this mental illness had on her and her family. The incidence of mental illness is more prevalent in our society than we may want to admit and we can not afford to turn a deaf ear to it. In her "non-mincing of the truth" style, Stacey brings the message home with a distinct IN YO FACE delivery.

Thank you Stacey for exposing yourself and allowing me to get to know you on a more real and peronable level. Your memoir further drives the point home for me that we all have a story we MUST tell!

Chasing Rainbows: Collecting American Indian Trade & Camp Blankets
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (January, 2003)
Authors: Barry Friedman and Gary Diamond
Average review score:

Five Stars Is Not Enough For This Book. Six, Seven, Eight!
The long-rumored book by the rather legendary authority on Indian blankets is finally a reality and the result is one of the great surprises of my reading life.I was expecting superb photos of spectacular blankets.I was expecting the hard data collectors love - label information and the like. These things the author serves up in spectacular helpings and blows the previous books on the subject completely out of the water.
What I was NOT expecting was masterful storytelling and towering wit. A relatively dry subject in ordinary hands becomes a riveting and often hilarious joyride here.Friedman's take on the antiques business and wickedly clever asides are worthy of Dave Barry on DB's very best day. Moreover, his grasp of history is sure and thought-provoking.It isn't necessary to be a blanket collector to love this book. It's the author you'll come to love and he will make you love and understand these beautiful blankets.THIS is the book I'll be buying for friends this year!!

You say you want a revolution
A quick read of the reviews for this book reveal a Barry Friedman cult is already in full bloom. Tally yet another convert in me. I am delighted this singular volume found a home at the very prestigious Bulfinch Press. Bulfinch is the exclusive home of Ansel Adams and boasts multiple titles by the likes of Herb Ritts, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Robert Mappelthorpe. What's a collector/dealer of commercially manufactured Indian blankets doing in exalted company like this? Bulfinch decided he belongs and indeed he does. Friedman's artistry is in his words. He has an absolute mastery of his subject and a sense of humor that is quirky and completely audacious. One senses he KNOWS text like his is never found in books like this and somehow induced an editor to became a co-conspirator. A magnificently illustrated collecting book written with spirit and wit is just not done and certainly not by the likes of a high-toned publishing house like Bulfinch Press. Until now, that is. This is more than a book - it's a gorgeous act of rebellion!

Chasing Rainbows
I have never read a "coffee table book" cover to cover until I found Chasing Rainbows by Barry Friedman. This delightful, informative book pulls you in from the very beginning with humor and knowledge that prevents you from putting it down. I read it cover to cover in one sitting, an afternoon of sheer pleasure and factual understanding of the history and beauty of American Indian trade and camp blankets. I highly recommend this book for the pure joy of reading and understanding the history of a little known subject.

In the Arms of Adam: A Diary of Men
Published in Paperback by Xanthus Pr (May, 1997)
Author: James Randall Chumbley
Average review score:

Adversity in Being Me
The struggles we find ourselves in while becoming men are numerous. The struggles we find in being a man and being gay are even more numerous. Add to this growing up in a broken home. The odds are surely stacked against us.This book covers the life of a man that could be any one of us or are best friend.Randy had all odds stacked against him. A abusive and alcoholic father, a mother that could only protect him by taking the abuse herself. Coming to terms with his own sexuality Randy overcomes and gives hope to all who struggle with being gay. This is his life story filled with sorrow, lovers, friends and finally hope and strenght and success. I will read it again. OH yea!

Sincere, Honest and Powerful
Few books can be so rewarding as IN THE ARMS OF ADAM. Mr. Chumbley shares with us a journey of his life in a truely sincere and honest story. His examination of this journey is thought provoking, heart warming and beautiful. His poetic writing style is exquisite, as we follow a young man from chilhood horror to adult self satisfaction. Any person who has lived with abuse, and questions their own lifestyle and choices, needs to read IN THE ARMS OF ADAM. Gay men should Thank Mr. Chumbley for a true representation of our society towards gay men during this timeframe in our history. I really cannot say enough about this book, and the rewards it has given me after reading it. I will definitely read it again.

A Precipitous and Splendid Journey
No matter what your experiences, gay or straight, one cannot help but be moved by this young man's coming of age. This is not another politically correct maifesto of the gay political agenda, rather, it is a poignant, touching account of the author's transformation from boy to man. The work is a statement of who he is at his core, and how the events of his life brought him to know his true self.

The writing is as complex as the subject matter -- at one moment simple, joyful and innocent; the next moment contemplative and brutally honest.

Although the author and I had radically different upbringings, I cannot deny the similarities between our respective journeys into manhood. The book offers a very personal look at one man's experience yet the reader cannot help but reflect on his or her own.

This is a touching, wonderful book.

Lazy Daisy

An original and entertaining story
In Lazy Daisy, a young girl considers her messy room a masterpiece with its mountains of toys and piles of clothes, and a closet to match! Daisy considers herself with some pride as being the laziest girl in the world with a marvelous mess to prove it! Then Daisy's grandmother gets lost in all the mess and soon the entire town is buried in junk. Will Daisy learn her lesson and clean up the town before it's lost forever? Will Gramma get her dentures back? Enthusiastically recommended for young picturebook readers, Lazy Daisy is an original and entertaining story by David Olson that is showcased by Jenny Campbell's light and lively drawings.

Humor for children and adults
It's always a bonus when adults actually enjoy the books they read to children and Lazy Daisy is definitely one of those books that entertains both groups. The rhyming verse is very funny - David Olson is a creative writer who concocts a hilarious combination of words to tell Daisy's story, and the comical illustrations add a perfect touch to the impending catastrophe. I can't wait to read his next book!

American Booksellers PICK OF THE LISTS!!
This is a TERRIFIC book for kids! ALL of us have gone through the "CLEAN UP YOUR ROOM" issue with our kids. This book puts a hilarious spin on the consequences of living in a big fat mess! Your kids will love it..you will love it! This is a FIRST BOOK for both the author and the illustrator...and it was selected as an AMERICAN BOOKSELLER PICK OF THE LISTS for 2000! Both author and illustrator need to be congratulated for a fine piece of work, and I look forward to seeing the next one!

Car Buyer's and Leaser's Negotiating Bible
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (February, 1999)
Author: W. James Bragg
Average review score:

An absolute MUST HAVE for anyone buying a car
I've read several books on car buying, but this one is absolutely the best. Using the author's "Fax Attack" method, I was able to buy a new Nissan Sentra GXE for $300 *below* invoice (and the one I wanted is in short supply right now). Mr. Bragg tells you what to look for and look out for during every step of the shopping/buying process. You'll discover that even if you get a great price on a new car, you can lose money on add-ons, trade-ins and financing; he tells you exactly how to not "leave money on the table." To top it off, the book is easy to read. He doesn't bog you down with endless stories of fictional salesmen; but it's easy to read and understand. What else can I say but "BUY THIS BOOK!" ;-)

Best of it's kind
After browsing through several car buying guides, I decided that Mr. Bragg's book seemed to be the most concise and well written. I then took it home and read it cover to cover. It was both interesting and informative. I used his techniques to successfully purchase a brand new Volvo for $1,200 BELOW the sticker price. I used his unique "FAX attack" approach to find the dealer who was ready to sell me a car at my price without wasting time with sales games. I spent less than 2 hours at the dealer and drove home exactly the car I wanted. Don't buy a new car without reading this book first!

Don't Buy A New Car Until You Read This Book
This book is an absolutely incredible resource for the new car buyer. It explains in detail just how the car dealers will try to screw you. Then Mr. Bragg provides just about all the information you need to walk into a dealership and pick up a car for invoice or less. I couldn't have imagined how well this would work.

I sent faxes to 30 Baltimore / Washington Honda dealers explaining exactly what I wanted in my new Accord, and telling them that I was comparing plenty of prices. In a week I had serval dealers practically begging me to take exactly the car I wanted off their lot for less than invoice. I also met some of their sleazy competitors, but thanks to this book I identified their games and refused to play. The dealer even comped me on his dealer-added pinstripes and undercoating, since I had stated in my fax that I would refuse to pay for such additional add-ons.

You can count on an advertisment for an additional $10 per model for a copy of the dealer invoice and option prices, and a report of how the cars have been selling recently. Even so, $25 total is not too much to spend to save literally hundreds.

Thanks for providing such an incredible book.

Space Toys Of The 60's

A Tool for the Collector, a Trip for the Space Toy lover.
Space Toys of the 60s is a great book with loads of photos! If you are a collector of Major Matt Mason, Zeroids, or Colorforms Aliens, then this book is a must for you. Plenty of detail describes variations among the different items (Did you know that Calisto had both short and long boots?), a great help for discriminating collectors. Even if you aren't a collector, but just want to remember the fun you had playing with these toys when you were younger, this book is the ticket to memory lane. I love it (and I wish I still had all of those toys!). Thanks for the memories, James!

My Favorite Book
I received "Space Toys Of The 60's" as an early Father's Day present. I loved this book from the moment I opened up the package. Memories of my childhood came rushing back as I went through the pages. As a child, I had all the Major Matt Mason figures, Zeroid Robots, and my favorites... Colorforms Aliens. This book sparked my collecting frenzy (which is ongoing) thanks to James's excellent descriptions and photographs. I loved this book so much, that I had to send one to my brother!(Of course, he loves it too) This is a must have book for anyone who has fond memories of these wonderful toys.

A Must Have
If you're interested in collecting space themed toys from the sixties or if you'd just like to take a trip down memory lane , then buy this book. It's filled with great photos and loads of information on Major Matt Mason, Zeroids and Colorm Aliens. I've never come across another book that is a more concise guide on the subject. An excellent buy.

Goldfish have no hiding place

Author: James Hadley Chase
Average review score:

Fast paced, suspenseful, captivating thriller.
Anyone who has not read his books has a literary void in their life. I have worn out many a seat edge reading his books. His command of the language, his ability to put you smack in the middle of the action, his humour everything, is outstanding! The President of the US should declare an Executive Order to command his books be put back in print. I own several books, and in my opinion, he's the leader of the pack and not the mongrel sitting on the porch. James Hadley Chase is "The Man!!"

Incredibly good plot, which is thrilling all the way!
James Hadley Chase is the king of crime fiction! Believe me. He is my hero when it comes to story-telling. His stories are full of suspenses and thrill. He tells stories that are beyong your wildest imagination. Boy! what an author. I can't understand why his books are no longer printed. are all the publishers blind? James Hadley Chase is number one. You might say what about Christe Agathy and Sidney Sheldon. Well, they cannot even come close to him. Every page in his books is thrilling and fun. man! I wish you read them. Does anyone want to exchange his books with me. I have a collection of him.

James Hadley Chase is the KING.............
My Dear fellow Chase Fans:
We all know what a great writer he was, we have read all of his books. Most of us are so disappointed that his books are not widely available in North America.

We all need to start a users/readers/group online. So we all can appreciate him together and let others know what they are missing.

I read his all of his books back in 80s in Asia. Now I am trying to find them in North America and Can not find all of them.
I want to buy all of his books for collection, but no one knows him in North America.

My salute to all of Hadely fans, lets get together online and celebrate one of the best crime writer in the history.

Thanks, Art. ...

Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League
Published in Hardcover by Total Sports (30 October, 2000)
Authors: Dan Diamond, James Duplacey, Ralph Dinger, Igor Kuperman, Eric Zweig, and Ernie Fitzsimmons
Average review score:

Excellent reference with some misguided priorities,
As previous reviewers have noted, this is an excellent reference that is bound to become a standard at almost the level of its "Total" brethren in baseball and football. However, I believe that the editors applied misguided priorities to the content of the book to some extent. Allegedly the official encyclopedia of the NHL, it includes over 100 pages on international hockey (in case you needed to know the 1967-8 league champion in Iceland), but devotes only a single page to Stanley Cup results, with W-L in Finals games and the winning and losing teams and coaches. I would have expected a book of this scope to list the scores of ALL Stanley Cup games, if not line scores and scoring summaries. The Stanley Cup playoffs are the showcase of the NHL, and it struck me as odd that the annual game results, at some level, did not find their way into this book.

This book has it all the stats, scores, and players.
This book can tell you everything you every wanted to know about hockey and the tradition of hockey. You get to see so many stats about all the teams and the players of the NHL. A must have for all Hockey fans and players of the wonderful game.

A work complete in itself...
This book was extremely well written, and being a hockey fan myself, I am always interested in finding new fact, figures, and the like. I was pleased at the way it informed me on everything that has happened in hockey. Everything trival anyone would want to know is in here! Statistics, players, history, you name it, it's in here. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation of the hockey players in all countries who entertain us everyday and to anyone that's a fan of the coolest game on earth!

Women of Color Study Bible: King James Version/Burgundy Bonded Leather

Author: World Bible Publishing

...wonderful
Although I am no longer a Christian, this is a great Bible for African American Women. I especialy enjoyed the essays in the back.

HOW THE BIBLE RELATES TO AFRICAN AMERICANS
This outstanding bible opened my eyes to how the Bible really relates to me, an African American woman. It affrims the presence of Africans in the Bible. It also helps to correct the distortions that were taught or told to my people for so many years. I use to believe in the Bible through blind faith, and thanks to this beautiful book,I now believe through knowledgeable faith. The Women of Color Study Bible is an excellent bible, which brakes down every book in easy to understand language and helps connect us (African Americans) to our African decents. Like never before in history, we women of color have our own bible to teach our families, the true meaning of God's word and his plan for our salvation. I leave my copy out on my coffee table, and six of my friends have already bought it, because they love my copy so much. We have formed a women of color bible study group, to discuss and learn more about God's word from this wonderful book.

Amazing
I have never had a book that is as enlightening as this. I love the Bible. We as African Americans haven't been taught about our place in biblical history, but because of the extensive research by this group, we now know. Thanks so much. Anyone that reads this Bible will certainly be blessed. Get ready!

Handbook for the Soul
Published in Audio Cassette by Time Warner Audio Books (October, 1995)
Authors: Richard Carlson, Benjamin Shield, Blair Brown, and James Coburn
Average review score:

Great book for anyone looking for "something more"
This is an excellent anthology of essays by many accomplished scholars (see the list of names above). Some are psychotherapists, some former ministers, and some psychiatrists; many are simply inspirational writers. This is a calming book with eclectic selections that will suit most tastes.

This is a book you will refer to over and over again!
I picked up this book when I was at a low point in my life. It awakened me to a new way of seeing - both myself and the world around me. Handbook for the soul is a wonderful collection of short essays, by various people, all with the same message. It is one of my most favourite books and I highly recommend it!

Thought provoking essays on the soul.
Anything Richard Carlson lays his hands on is worth considering reading. Each essay offers a philsophical view worth pondering guiding the perseptive reader closer to the inner self. The wealth of information well surprasses the few dollars spent on this compilation.
